Borderlands is a wonderful game full of action, comedy, and so much more. The game has a huge following. Many people claim to love the game and have spent many hours playing through missions, replaying through missions, and simply running around causing mayhem. I have always wondered what it is about Borderlands that made me love the series so much? It's unique in it's own way. The art style is unlike other games.

What do you think makes Borderlands unique?

The basic direction, both in terms of art style and dialogue lure you in and snap, your harangued into spending countless hours grinding for loot:) But what makes it unique for me is the sense that the world is more of a play ground where the interactions themselves mean more than any conclusion, whether plot or upgrade wise. I can have a friend over and instead of fretting about league play or k/d, we can just mess around and geek out over a loot drop. Is there any long term benefit in the game from that drop? Most likely not , but they've successfully modified my experience to keep it feeling fresh.

In my opinion, the amazing graphics of the game makes it unique.

Not sure there's any one thing that makes it unique, but it's a unique combination of a lot of things especially the graphics. That's for sure.

There are many things that make the game unique. The art style is one of the key parts of the game and many people play it just for that. Apart from that, the game play is straight up fun. Not many games are entertaining for hours and hours when you're just running around and shooting. The looting system also keeps things new. Borderlands finds a way to make everything fun.

Well it's unique for various reason: the art style is really nice, plus I always love the cell shading which is less of unique but not really common nowadays. The characters, the humour are also something you don't find in other games: of course other videogames can be funny, but the Borderlands series have this kind of particular humour which I can't explain but I really enjoy.
Also the randomly generated weapons, I know there are other games with this system but they get boring and repetitive pretty quickly. Maybe it's the fanboy in me speaking, but I really think the Borderlands system works better than others...

Everything makes it unique. It's the combination of everything it has. The graphics are completely different from other games (some tried to mimic it and failed). The characters are unique with funny personalities. They also implement fun and humor throughout the game so not laughing is impossible. The weapons, the various effects they have... my list could go on forever.

Borderlands, in general, are one of the most unique games in this genre.

I really dig the art style of the Borderlands series as well. It's almost comicbook-like, and tongue in cheek humor the game has parallels the art style phenomenally.

The weapons are unique and a joy to use, especially as you discover the different kinds that the modifiers they may have on them. It's really an all around joy to play the game.

You have to love a game that has a dedicated following.

I'm surprised to see so many people talking about the art style and graphics. I mean, I know that stuff is important. I guess I've always just been more about the gameplay, which everyone also seems to agree is fun.

What specifically about the gameplay makes it unique, if anyone cares to answer?

As understood by every gamer, gameplay is the key to a good game. The thing about Borderlands is that the unique aspects of gameplay, such as the diversity of weapons and their various elemental capabilities, and the copious number of entertaining quests and sidequests, the art style is so unique, it just adds that much more to the experience.

It sounds cool. So, what makes the questing so much more entertaining than quests in other games? That really grabs my interest, since questing is probably my least favorite part sometimes. If the quests were actually fun though, that would be huge for me. What sets them apart? Do you have any examples?

Do you get to choose how you complete a quest - are there different options?

For me, the novelty of the quests comes from the dialogue and tasks you need to complete. Borderlands doesn't have a one-of-a-kind unique questing method, as most every quest and side-quest is linear and you don't have a say in how you complete it necessarily. However, one aspect that I like is that a lot of quests make you encounter unique mini-bosses, who are generally fun to spar with.

It's a nice change from games like Assassins Creed per say, where the side missions are nearly identical.

Oh, okay, thanks for telling me about it. That does sound kind of fun, especially if the mini-bosses offer a bit of challenge.

I find most questing to get a little... tedious after a while. This sounds like a nice way to break things up. I probably wouldn't burn out on the questing portion so fast with something like this.

It's just kill a bunch of these, gather a bunch of those and on and on that gets to me. After 100 levels of it in some games, you just want to be done.

I understand what you mean. I mean, I'd recommend giving Borderlands a shot if you're interested, but again, the questing isn't necessarily ground breaking. It's really that the quests have "personality" if you will, which makes them unique to me.

Just last night I did a quest in Borderlands 2 where I had to gather stuffed animals from across the wasteland for some maniacal 13-year-old's tea party because I needed her to build me explosives to heist a train with.

Really, I haven't encountered many other games that make me smile like Borderlands does.
